    July 16, 2010 by admin

GM is the term genetically modified food referred as. Generally GN is defined as that the food that is produced by recombination of plants DNA to give plant a desire able quality. This definition differs for some people. This modification is done in labs under the supervision of genetic engineers. Many people also the conventional breeding methods under the heading of GM.

Tomato; the first GM crop was submitted in the year 1994 to US FDA for approval
By the year 2008, there were about 111 crops were available in markets that were genetically modified. These crops include potatoes, soybean, corn, papaya, rice, squash, sugar beet, wheat, flax, and canola.  70 to 75% foods available in American grocery stores are genetically modified using these modern methods. It also includes frozen pizza, soda and hot dogs. GM foods have many benefits as well as there are some risks in using these foods.

The main and supreme benefit of GM food is that it is fighting with world hunger. It has a noble motivation to provide food for all. This technology is supported by many scientists and economists. These foods give higher yield and are ease in growing as compare to traditional methods of agriculture. Gm crops have better quality. They can bear drought, pest and other disasters. Having different types, different flavors and colors of a same vegetable is result of GM food and cross breeding.

GM foods are proved as more nutrient rich as compare to other. They are good source to fight with malnutrition of both types; under nutrition and wrong nutrition. But according to opponents of GM foods these goods are made to make profit. These foods are unfettered and free from all activities. Opponents and anti-GM people claims that these foods can harm the environment and can harm the human as well.

This type for scenario had happened in Europe, when rice were delivered into market without checking either they are suitable for human or not. it is considered as it is harmful for those animal which lives near GM fields. It is also claimed that using more of GM food can made human body resistant to antibiotics. Western Europe is act strongly as anti-GM than other nations. Though there are not many evidences are present to support these ideas but people do have such concerns in their minds.
